God don’t need no guns.

“So a message was sent to the king of Assyria: “The people you have sent to live in the towns of Samaria do not know the religious customs of the God of the land. He has sent lions among them to destroy them because they have not worshiped him correctly.” ‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭17‬:‭26‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Yeah, God sent lions! I’ve been thinking about how God led His people in the Old Testament and how God warns and corrects His own people as well as every powerful leader of the ancient world.

When we think about God leading it might seem that He does so gently, even subtly. Truth is, God led Israel, coming out of Egypt, with two of the most powerful destructive forces on Earth. Of the basic elements of nature: earth, air, fire, and water. God used wind and fire to lead His people and water to judge the Egyptians. Even in modern times, even if humankind has mastered both sea and sky, we still fear wind, water and fire! Does God still use these elements to judge?

In the Old Testament, I’ve read about giant holes that swallow complainers and dissidents. I’ve read about bears that devour young mockers. I’ve read about the big ten extraordinarily miserable plagues to push Pharaoh into doing right. And, sure there have been amazing stories of other wild beasts mentioned, like whales, leviathans, dogs, lions and bears – even a talking donkey (not played by Eddie Murphy). All the while, I never noticed that God sent lions to eat people because of disobedience! It made me think of the 1996 movie called, “The Ghost and the Darkness,” where Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas were hired to kill a pair of Tsavo man-eaters, during the building of the Uganda-Mombasa Railway in East Africa in 1898.

God sent several lion prides to bring judgment and send a strong message to the Assyrian king – “I’ve let you capture my people and even allowed you to have other nations live among them – but they better not mess with the way I have commanded my people to worship me!” What! God is wild and will not be tamed, and there are things He just will not tolerate. Who’s really in control? This powerful king of Assyria, Shalmaneser V, would find out who is really in charge of all the affairs on this dark third planet from the sun.

With all the forces of the earth at God’s disposal, He doesn’t need men, guns, missiles or drones. One little 6.0 tremor in Afghanistan resulted in a death toll of over 2,205 people, with thousands more injured. I’m not saying it was God’s judgement. I wouldn’t pretend to assume to know the why behind any loss of life. But talk about the raw power God has at his disposal. Any of us, any world leader who thinks they have full authority and power to rule as they please is just delusional! God was merciful enough to warn Shalmaneser and the king responded accordingly. “The king of Assyria then commanded, “Send one of the exiled priests back to Samaria. Let him live there and teach the new residents the religious customs of the God of the land.” So one of the priests who had been exiled from Samaria returned to Bethel and taught the new residents how to worship the Lord.” 2 Kings‬ ‭17‬:‭27‬-‭28‬. Oh how funny Shalmaneser was, “the God of the land…” He is God of ALL lands! The “new” residents brought in the most detestable, wicked behaviors – “the people from Sepharvaim even burned their own children as sacrifices to their gods Adrammelech and Anammelech,” God had warned and set the Assyrian king and His own people straight on who is really in charge!

Prayer

It is still very surprising to me that even a quick summary reading of who you are wouldn’t put some fear or respect in the hearts and mind of folks here on earth. So many have really done well at fooling themselves into believing you don’t even exist, let alone are the just judge of all the earth and all human affairs on the planet. Their biggest error is they think they have gotten away with it – mistaking both mercy and your providential purposes for proof that they are untouchable. I am just thankful that I know you and belong to you. Even in my sin, I would never be so arrogant to pretend you would let me get away anything contrary to Your Word! Thank you for grace. And may those who seek you find mercy and yield to Your will.

Water & Spirit poured out.

“But now, listen to me, Jacob my servant, Israel my chosen one. The Lord who made you and helps you says: Do not be afraid, O Jacob, my servant, O dear Israel, my chosen one. For I will pour out water to quench your thirst and to irrigate your parched fields. And I will pour out my Spirit on your descendants, and my blessing on your children. They will thrive like watered grass, like willows on a riverbank.” ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭44‬:‭1‬-‭4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The two powerful themes that thread through Israel’s history in the Old Testament, become a reality for all people in the New Testament. God’s prophetic promises are all fulfilled through Jesus!

The imagery explodes when Jesus begins announcing that He is the river of life! In John, Jesus tells the woman at the well that He is living water that pours out with no end. He also says in John 7: 37-39 “‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” The “living water” ties together a long history of Israel being cleaned and purified by fresh, running water and what will become the permanent illustration that is fulfilled by the Holy Spirit being poured out after Jesus returned to heaven. Tyler Staton writes, “The Spirit of God is described through the imagery of water in the poetry of Psalms and Proverbs; the prophecies of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Joel; and by the Gospel writer John. But the promise comes alive most clearly in the prophet Ezekiel, who saw a vision of a river that originated in a trickle running down the temple. It grew from a trickle on the steps to a flowing river as he followed the current east.”

Everywhere the river flows, it brings life. Everyone the river touches, brings new life. God promised to pour out His Spirit on Isaiah’s descendants, blessing the children. But the promise extends much further than just the Israelites, beyond Isaiah’s, Jeremiah’s, Joel’s and Ezekiel’s children. It extends to all who will come and freely drink and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit poured out in abundance today and on our children as well!

​Dad,
I am not Jewish and have no ancestry connecting me to the promises you made to your people and the prophets. Neither am I a son of Abraham. However, because of Jesus I have been grafted into the tree of life, adopted into the family of God and have all the rights and privileges of being your son. Thank you for giving me life abundantly. Thank you for pouring out your Spirit on me! I am forever grateful for this life I now lead and look forward to the grand adventures yet to come in the Kingdom that has arrived, yet is still to come!

Meme Meditation.

Oh, how I love your instructions! I think about them all day long. Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for they are my constant guide. Yes, I have more insight than my teachers, for I am always thinking of your laws. I am even wiser than my elders, for I have kept your commandments. Psalms‬ ‭119‬:‭97‬-‭100‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Psalm 119 is structured as an alphabetic acrostic, with 176 verses divided into 22 stanzas of eight verses each. Each stanza begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and each verse in a stanza begins with the same letter. For example, the first stanza is named “A” and each of its eight verses begins with the letter “A”.

Today’s devo is brought to us by the letter “M.” Mem is the thirteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Numerical value: 40. Sound: “M” Meaning: 1. Water. Chabad.org explains, “The word mem stands for mayim, which means water. Water constitutes a vital element in our lives: a human being is largely composed of water and the majority of the earth is covered with it. Torah, the most vital element in our spiritual lives, is referred to as water, as it states: “Ein mayim ela Torah13—There is no water but Torah.” As the Prophet tells us, “He who is thirsty shall go and drink water,” meaning that a Jew’s thirst for spiri­tuality will never be sated by looking to other cultures or religions. The only thing that will quench one’s thirst is water, which is Torah. Just as a fish cannot survive without water, a Jew cannot survive without Torah.”

It is believed that Ezra wrote Psalm 119 as a manual for devotion. The “מ Mem” stanza is a beautiful meditation about God’s law, His instructions for life, guidance and wisdom. The most memorized verse in this passage is vs 103, “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” Echoing the words of David in Psalm 19:10, “[God’s Law] They are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.” Which also reminds me of Psalm 34:8, “Taste and see that the LORD is good.”

The psalmists do a wonderful job of giving us picturesque language to help us associate God’s goodness with things that we are very familiar with. God’s wisdom, like “Mem,” water, is pure and refreshing. It is like eating of tasty wisdom that sets up for success above our enemies and helps us excel in understanding even beyond our teacher and elders. Not in a competitive or arrogant manner, but in humble curiosity of an unquenchable appetite to know God! And, it is GOOD!

​Dad,
I have tasted and I have seen the goodness of your Word. It has been that delicious treat for the cravings of my soul. It has been a light in darkness, illuminating my path ahead. It is everything the Psalmists have declared it to be. Thank you for your living Word that eternally works within me! I am a satisfied customer of your grace and mercy! Amen.
